House Hearing Held on Reauthorizing the Combating Autism Act

On July 11th, the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee held a hearing on the CAA and other public health legislation. The Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Thomas Insel, testified, focusing on the achievement of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) that was created by the CAA. Other provisions of the CAA include centers for excellence, surveillance, and education for early detection and intervention. Due to “sunset” language, this law will expire if it is not reauthorized by September 30th. The House version of the CAA would authorize the legislation for an additional three years. Meanwhile, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee twice postponed its mark-up of the CAA reauthorization legislation, which is now scheduled for August 3rd.
