Last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that 91 more metropolitan areas will be added to a competitive bidding program designed to save Medicare billions of dollars for wheelchairs, oxygen supplies, and other durable medical equipment. The program had been piloted in 9 metropolitan areas. The new round of bidding will start in the winter of 2012. Many disability groups have expressed concerns that the emphasis on the lowest cost might compromise the quality of the equipment, especially for more complex wheelchairs and other equipment.
