Bill to ensure payment of Social Security Checks, if Government Defaults

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) introduced S. 1364 to guarantee the payment of Social Security checks during August 2011 in the event of a government default, if Congress fails to reach a deal on the debt ceiling by August 2nd. The bill responds to concerns that Social Security checks may be delayed or jeopardized if the Treasury lacks the cash on hand to pay benefits. The bill covers Social Security retirement, survivors’, and Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) benefits; it does not cover Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
