Divisions Continue in “Biden Talks” Meetings

Congressional negotiators working with Vice President Biden to develop a deficit reduction plan met three more times last week. The negotiators include Senators Max Baucus (D-MT), John Kyl (R-AZ), Daniel K. Inouye (D-HI), and Representatives Eric Cantor (R-VA), James E. Clyburn (D-SC), and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). After last Thursday’s meeting, Vice President Biden said that negotiators have completed an initial “scrub” of all areas of the federal budget but remain divided over revenue and entitlement changes as they seek a plan that can secure bipartisan support. Deficit reduction continues to be of major importance to The Arc as proposals to address the deficit are likely to include cuts to entitlement programs (Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security) and discretionary programs (such as supportive housing, special education, and paratransit) that people with disabilities rely on.
