House Committee Begins Debating Balanced Budget Amendment

The House Judiciary Committee began marking up a measure introduced by Rep. Robert Goodlatte (R-VA) that would amend the U.S. Constitution to require the federal government to limit spending to the amount it takes in each year. The House is expected to vote on H.J. Res. 1 on June 13th. If the measure passes the House, it is widely expected to be rejected by the Senate. The Arc opposes this proposed constitutional amendment because it would hamper the ability of the federal government to address the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for essential supports and services. There are several other balanced budget amendment bills which may move forward after the vote.
